TREK003-2: Taklamagan-Through "the sea of death"

 

Introduction:

The largest desert in china, and the second largest shifting desert in the world. It is located in the center of Junggar Basin . It covers an area of 337,600 square kilometers, accounting for 47.3 percent of the total area deserts in China. In  Uygur language, Taklimakan means "You will never go out if you enter in”. Although the desert has another name” the sea of death”, you still find so many colorful and glory ancient civilizations in some oasis around the desert.

 

 

Taklamagan - Through “the sea of death”

9 days in the Taklamagan desert, the camel team will lead you the way, live in tents in the night. The most attraction is Turpan,a pearl in the Old Silk Road, there you will see many interests sites and along the longest desert highway in the world ,you will never forget the magnificence of the grand desert.

 

Day1: Beijing

Arrive in Beijing, Our tour guide will pick you up at the airport and transfer to the hotel in the city. Visit the Tiananmen Square-the largest city square in the world and the Forbidden City, which used to be the living place of the emperors of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.

 

Day2: Visit in Beijing

Drive to the Great Wall (Mutianyu) which is located 50 miles away from the city (2 hour's drive), hiking there for one and a half hours. Enjoy your lunch. Move on to the Ming Tomb where 13 emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) were buried in the afternoon. Transfer back to your hotel.

 

Day3: Beijing - Urumqi - Kashgar

In the morning visit the Temple of Heaven where the emperors worshipped for the harvest, and have a Hutong tour or walk in Liulichang, to experience the real life of the Beijing local people. Afternoon, fly to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In the evening fly to Kashgar. the last station of the Silk Road in China,a vibrant Islamic center within Chinese territory. It is the largest oasis city in Chinese Central Asia and 90 per cent of its population of over 3,000,000 are Uygur.

 

Day4: Visit in Kashgar

Visit the Sunday Market. The Id Kah Mosque, built in 1442 it is one of the largest and most active mosques in the country. The mosque exemplifies grand Islamic architecture, with a rectangular entranceway, flanked by intricately designed, slender minarets. And the Abakh Khoja Tomb, Built from 1640, in China the tomb is better known as the Tomb of Xiang Fei, the only Uigur concubine among the 41 wives of Emperor Qianglong in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Tomb is admired as a well-preserved Islamic architectural complex not only in Xinjiang, but throughout Cental Asia. Then visit the old part of the city.

 

Day5: Kashgar - Kohtan

Drive to the oasis in Hotan along the Silk Road that follows the southern boundary of the Taklamakan Desert. Hotan is famous for its productions of silk, carpets, jade and paper. We'll visit a silk, and paper manufactory.

 

Day6: Kohtan - Yutian

Drive about 180km on the South Silk Road, roughly 4 hours to the next town – Yutian. It is located at the very southern end of the Xinjiang, and was one of the important places on the ancient Silk Road. After arrival, visit some villages around.

 

Day7: Yutian – Kunbulat (Tent)

Drive along the Keriya River on Toyota Jeeps, about 100km to Kunbulat. Camp on the riverbed.

 

Day8: Kunbulat - Daheyan Village (Tent)

Continue driving 100km to Daheyan Village, a unusual village located in the center of Taklamagan Desert. We meet our camel men and camels there. Our expedition can go nowhere without their help. Prepare for expedition.

 

Day9-15: Trekking to Muzatag (Tent)

We are out of the civilized world and trekking into the desert during seven days. We walk away from the Keriya River, trekking westward. The vegetation – camel grass and desert poplar trees get less and less as we walk forward. Generally, we trek 20km each day (direct distance is about 15km) with our camel fully loaded with equipment, crossing the undulating sand dunes time after time. Those who have good conditions will have enough time to walk on other sand dunes to enjoy beautiful landscapes in different height and different directions.

Hotan River is running from south to north, and our destination, which can be seen in the distance, lies at the bank of the river. The difference of the temperature between the day and night is 45 degree centigrade, so the preparation both in mental and material is very important. We camp all the way in the evening during the trek. On the seventh day, we will reach our destination – the Mazar Tagh Mountains (80km long and 3km wide).

 

Day16: Drive to Yecheng

In the morning visit Mazar Tagh Mountains. Afternoon say goodbye to our camel men, and then drive to Yecheng. Yecheng is the name of both the oasis and the town and is situated on the southern rim of the Taklamakan desert about halfway between Pishan and Yarkand on the southern route around the Tarim Basin.

 

Day17: Yecheng - Akesu

Passing by many small villages on the way. Arrive in Akesu, a city on the Akesu River, the center of an oasis at the foot of the Tian Shan mts. It is a caravan hub on the Old Silk Road.

 

Day18: Aksu - Kuqa

Drive through the Tianshan Mountains to reach Kuqa, and visit Kizil Buddha Caves. The caves built on the bank of river. Being the earliest Buddhist construction in China, it was founded in the 3rd century and once contained 200 caves, obviously influenced by Indian architectural style.

 

Day19: Kuqa - Kurla

In the morning visit the ancient town of Subashi. The Subashi Ruins occupy a relatively large area, divided by Kuqa River into eastern and western areas. The eastern area is over 530 meters (about 580 yards) long and over 140 meters (about 153 yards) wide and the western area is over 680 meters (about 744 yards) long and 170 meters (about 186 yards) wide. The extent of the ruins reflects the temple's past brilliance. Then drive about 300km to Kurla.

 

Day20: Kurla - Turpan

Drive 380km through a mountain pass with elevation of 1875 meters to reach Turfan. The city has long been the center of a fertile oasis and an important trade center. It was historically located along the Silk Road's northern route.

 

Day21: Visit in Turpan and Drive to Urumuqi

Visit the Gaochang, it was an ancient city, was built in the 1st century BC, 30km from Turpan, it played a key role as a transportation hub in western China. And the Jiaohe ruins, was built during the time span from the 2nd century BC to the middle of the 5th century AD. Then visit Emin Tower and so on, it is located 2 km east of the city of Turpan, built in 1778, the biggest tower in Xinjiang, it was built by Turpan prefecture commandant Su Laiman to commemorate and praise his father Eminhoja who achieved brilliant military success in suppressing the armed rebellion raised by the Jungar aristocrats. Drive to Urumuqi.

 

Day22: Fly to Beijing

Check out of the hotel and transfer to the airport/railway station to catch the flight to Beijing. And fly to home.
