SHR005-1: Trek on the Wutaishan
Introduction
As one of the twenty-four famous historical cities in China, Datong is known for its abundant historical relics and natural beauty. Unlike the pretty and elegant scene in cities south of China, sceneries in Datong boast the air of majesty and grandeur.
Wutaishan is a sacred mountain, is believed to be the earthly abode of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Manjushri, and for a thousand years it has been a focus of transnational pilgrimage for the Chinese, Tibetans, Mongols, and Manchus alike.
Trek on the Wutaishan
This tour will lead you to Datong’s most famous sightseeing spots. Visit the Buddhist sacred mountain Wutaishan, and trek on this mountain. The end city is Taiyuan, capital city of Shanxi province.
Day1: Arriving
Take the train from Beijing to Datong (15:03-22:33). At 22:33 arrive in Datong, our tour guide will pick you up at the railway station and transfer to the hotel in the city.
Day2: Yungang Buddhist Caves - Huayan Monastery - Shanhua Monastery
Visit of Datong city, a famous historical and cultural city. It was the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386AD - 494 AD). There are many historical relics, you will visit the Yungang Buddhist Caves, consists of a series of 53 caves, and the caves are home to over 51, 000 stone sculptures that were completed during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Visit the Huayan Monastery, and the Shanhua Monastery. Then stroll hutong in residential area.
Day3: Datong - Wutaishan Mountains
Drives 2 hours to Wutai County. Visit the Xuankong Temple on the way, the Temple is hung on the middle of the cliff, built 1,400 years ago, hosts worship for the Taoists, Confucians and Buddhists. Arrive at Wutaishan, Trek to East Peak (Peak Overlooking the Sea in Chinese, 2,795 meters), and visit a temple.
Day4: Trek on the mountain Drive to Middle Peak (Peak of Green Rocks), the huge rocks resembles moving dragons when seen in the sunlight. Trek from here to North Peak (Peak of Flourishing Leaves, 3,058 meters) for 2.5 hours, On the terrace of the peak, there is a natural pool that is over 300 square meters, then trek 3 hours to arrive at Taihuai village, and descend return to the same hotel(carry lunch with us ).
Day5: Wutaishan - Taiyuan
Visit Xiantong Temple, the biggest and the most prestigious bell on the mountain, built during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220). And visit Buddhist temple, Pusading Temple and Longquansi Temple in the morning. Afternoon leave Wutaishan, drive 3 hours to Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, an ancient city with a history of 2500 years. Visit Foguangsi Temple on the way. This temple is one of the most important remained wooden architectural jewels of Chinese civilization, built during the Tang Dynasty (857).
Day6: Departure
Check out of the hotel and transfer to airport, then fly to home.
